Choosing a Site for Compost

  1. The location of your compost site is very important.

 

Components of Compost

60% Moisture

30:1 Carbon:Nitrogen (Bedding: Manure)

 

 Carbon: Nitrogen Ratios  Bedding: Manure

Manure  ~16:1

Hay/Straw  ~45:1

Add water content


 .32lb Bedding : 1lb. Manure =

1 part Bedding : 3 Parts Manure

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

    

 

   

Steps For Taking Care of Compost

  1. The pile should be mountain shaped with a convex top

  2. Cover with a tarp to retain moisture
  3. Turn the pile completely over itself once a week (1/4 at a time) for three months
  4. During dry weather add water to your buckets-Compost should be the consistency of a damp sponge
  5. Check Temperature with a 3 foot probe thermometer. the compost should reach at least 160 degrees F for a short period of time to kill parasites.
  6. After turning for three months and dirt is made, allow to cure for one to three months.
  7. Sell as a soil amendment in bags or use in pastures or fields.
